A huge public artwork is being planned for the new Ebbsfleet International train station in North Kent, which was officially opened today.

The structure, proposed to be twice the height of the Angel of the North, will be created by one of five short-listed candidates, and will be positioned close to the A2.

"It is an iconic thing we're trying to create here," said Allan Willet, Lord Lieutenant of Kent, quoted by BBC News.

The creation is due to be finished by 2010, but not everyone is looking forward to the proposed 'icon of the south'.

Writing in the Guardian's Art and Architecture blog, Jonathan James says he is horrified by the commission, and wonders where it will all end.

"Doubtless there will eventually be Angels of the east and west. If they live up to the nickname, Britain will resemble a Norse fantasy landscape," he warned.
