Last week saw London's Oxford Street Christmas lights switched on by singer Leona Lewis, but festivities in the capital certainly aren't ending there.

At 6 o clock tonight the Regent Street Christmas lights, which organisers describe as "modern and futuristic", will be turned on.

The lights have been built to respond to the number of pedestrians in the street and are claimed to be environmentally friendly – with LED bulbs that use a fifth of the energy required by traditional lights. The formation of the lights will continue to change over the festive season, in response to shoppers as well as other factors such as wind speed and weather.

After lighting the 'unique' lights in Regent Street, Thursday evening will see a more traditional switch on for the white lights of Bond Street.

Londoners and visitors to the city will then have a break from lighting up ceremonies – until the Trafalgar Square Christmas tree is lit on 6 December.
