The twice-delayed direct train service between Sunderland and London’s King Cross station is to start at the end of this month, according to its operator.

Grand Central was originally due to begin operating its franchise in late 2006, but announced in December that the services would be delayed through lack of rolling stock. In April this year, slower than anticipated refurbishment of the operator’s second-hand stock led it to announce a further delay.

The trains will also service Hartlepool, Eaglescliffe, Northallerton, Thirsk and York.

Managing director Ian Yeowart told BBC News that the vehicles would start arriving in the North East within ten days, and that staff were "chomping at the bit" to begin the service.

"We will give an exact start date very soon - but it will be at the end of the month," he added.

Meanwhile, a separate BBC article reports the introduction of a speed dating service on a Lincolnshire train route. On 27 September, passengers on the Poacher Line between Grantham and Skegness will have the opportunity to find love with fellow passengers.

Organiser ‘Neblina’ said: "A lot of people are lonely, but people sit on public transport the same route everyday and they notice somebody.

"Sometimes there is eye contact and… you know there is interest but how on earth do you take it further?"
