Wales' tiny Ffestiniog and West Highland Railway is to be twinned with one of the largest railway companies in the world, according to BBC News.

The Welsh company is forming the bond with the Indian Railway Company, which runs services along the famous Darjeeling Himalayan Line. The Indian route, which opened 125 years ago, was modelled on its Welsh predecessor and was the first railway to be granted World Heritage status.

Officials from India are now visiting Wales as part of the formal twinning of the two companies. A spokesperson for the Ffestiniog and West Highland Railway told BBC News that the event was a "huge boost" for the company.

Ffestiniog and West Highland Railway operate trains on two separate narrow-gauge routes, one from Caernarfon to Snowdon, the other from Ffestiniog to Porthmadog. A new section that will link the two lines is due to be opened by Easter 2009.
