A new cable bridge linking the south-east of Scotland to the north-east will be built to replace the existing structure, which was showing signs of corrosion from increased traffic and the weather.

Costing up to £4.2 billion, the new Forth crossing will be just west of the 40-year-old original and is set to be Scotland’s biggest construction project for a decade, according to finance minister John Swinney.

Scottish Parliament was forced to take action when cables on the existing bridge became so corroded that engineers advised it may have to close to lorries by 2013, and to all traffic by 2019.

Quoted on BBC News, Mr Swinney said the new bridge would not only be cheaper and quicker to construct than a tunnel, it would also be "an iconic structure, delivered through effective and comprehensive care for our natural environment."

The new road crossing will have a two-lane carriageway, a light rail or guided bus system and both pedestrian and cycle access.

Construction on the five-and-a-half year project is expected to get underway in 2011.
