Christmas shoppers in Wrexham are being encouraged to take a break to watch two of the town's most impressive avian residents.

A pair of peregrine falcons has taken up residence on the roof of St Giles' church, dubbed one of the Seven Wonders of Wales.

Volunteers from the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) are handing out binoculars and telescopes to shoppers, so they can keep an eye on the falcons' activities.

The RSPB's Des James told BBC News: "The busy town centre may seem like an unusual spot for a pair of peregrines to set up home, but actually their church perch is perfect."

"The building ledge they roost on is a wonderful urban version of the more natural cliff or quarry roosting site," he added.

Other city centres where peregrines can often be seen include Exeter, Chichester and Derby, and birds are also seen regularly around the Tate Modern on the South Bank in London.
