Elton John has announced he is to play a one-off concert in Swansea, delighting the city’s tourism leaders.

The Rocket Man will perform at the Liberty Stadium on Sunday 29 June next year. The event is expected to attract Elton fans from all over the UK.

Speaking in the South Wales Evening Post, Geoff Haden, vice-chairman of Tourism Swansea Bay, said he believes the concert will be a huge boost for the city’s economy, and anticipates hotels, bars and restaurants being filled to capacity with music lovers.

"This is exactly what Swansea needs," he said. "As we have seen in Cardiff, people will make a long weekend out of going to see a concert. This will be a boost for hotels, so we now need to educate hotel staff on how to show off all that Swansea has to offer. Hopefully, people may decide to come back for a week at a later date, to see all the delights of the area."

Swansea Council leader Chris Holley agreed the gig was a massive coup.

"Sir Elton's decision to stage a concert in Swansea is an endorsement of the city and the venue as one of the major up-and-coming stadium concert stages in Britain," he said. "This decision will be a boost to the local economy and businesses alike."
