A small Scottish town is expecting many thousands of visitors this week for the Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships.

Fort William, in the West Highlands of Scotland, has hosted mountain bike World Cup events since 2002, but the Championships are a one-off event comprised of 19 separate races.

Organisers say that they expect around 40,000 people to attend the series of events, which runs from today (Tuesday 4th) to Sunday 9th September. They have asked spectators staying in the town to cycle to the races where possible, or to share car travel using the Liftshare website.

Away from the cycling, riders and spectators in Fort William will be able to enjoy a series of events staged to coincide with the championships. Among the highlights will be the Big Bens Big Top, a 2,500-capacity tent hosting events on Friday and Saturday, along with Sunday's official closing party.
