An attempt to create a world-record-breaking wooden spoon is currently under way on the grounds of Cardiff Castle.

Ed Harrison is using a chainsaw to carve the spoon, which already measures 25ft 9in. He is attempting to beat the current world record, which he already holds with a 22ft spoon.

The project is set to finish in the next few days, with Mr Harrison planning to transport the work to his workshop in west Wales to finish the project.

Love spoons are traditionally carved by young men from a single piece of wood, as a token for their sweethearts. The spoons were meant to show prospective parents-in-law that the young man was capable of providing for his wife-to-be.

Today the spoons are given as gifts for weddings, anniversaries and birthdays.

Mr Harrison told BBC News that he "hasn't got any plans for it yet" but that he "might try and show it off a bit".
