A Jacobean hall that once belonged to Henry VIII has been opened to visitors.
Grade I listed Apethorpe Hall near Oundle in Northamptonshire dates back to the 15th century. It was allowed to fall into disrepair under private ownership during the 1980s. After a compulsory purchase action, English Heritage began a £4 million restoration in 2004.
The work, which is due to be completed next year, has included a programme of historical and archaeological research. Among the discoveries this has produced are a possible lost "east range" and two 17th century plasterwork ceiling friezes.
English Heritage says that it wants to see the building returned to private ownership. Project director Nick Hall commented: "We believe the best use for Apethorpe, a building which has suffered a very turbulent recent history, is the use for which it was always intended - a country home for a single, private owner."
