This winter's train timetable ushers in a record number of passenger services on our railways, say Britain's train operators.
The 2008 Winter National Rail timetable, which came into force on Sunday 9 December, includes some 20,000 scheduled trains each weekday. The Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) says that by the end of December it expects 1.18 billion people to have travelled by train in 2007.
Sunday also saw the end of train services to London's Kings Cross Thameslink station, with First Capital Connect's services from Brighton, Bedford and East Anglia now stopping at nearby St Pancras International. Kings Cross Thameslink will now become an underground station only.
Meanwhile, London welcomed yet another new destination this morning, with Mayor Ken Livingstone opening the new Langdon Park station in Poplar. The station, which cost £10.5 million to build, brings Docklands Light Railway (DLR) trains to a large residential area of Bromley, where residents say they will help the area's regeneration.
