Plans to fit Blackpool's famous carriage horses with a form of nappy have been approved by the town's council.
Residents and visitors to Blackpool have complained about the smell of horse droppings on the promenade, and a voluntary scheme encouraging carriage drivers to pick up the dung has proved only partially successful.
So, Blackpool Council has approved plans to fit dung-catchers to all of the 44 licensed landaus in Blackpool by Easter 2008.
The adjustable device works for horses of either sex and is expected to last several years. The cost is estimated at around £90 per licensed landau vehicle.
Lockable bins have been put on Blackpool's promenade to enable landau owners to empty the horse droppings.
