Stirling neighbourhoods
From your Stirling hotel, explore the Old Town as it huddles around the hill to the castle and is lit up beautifully at night. Most of the city’s attractions including the Old Town Jail and Argyll’s Lodgings are in this pretty cobbled part of town. Pubs and restaurants congregate around the Thistles Shopping Centre. A couple of miles south, Bannockburn Heritage Centre is dedicated to the eponymous battle against England, the greatest victory in Scottish history. North-east of the town, the towering Wallace Monument is visible from the castle ramparts.
Shopping in Stirling
The Victorian Crawford Arcade has a range of specialist retailers including the must-visit A Wee Sweetie, where you can buy moreish Granny’s Sookers, or sweets as they are known to you or me. Described as Stirling’s Left Bank, Baker Street and Friars Street are a paradise for retro bric-a-brac and antiques, and there are farmers’ markets at Maxwell Place for your fresh haggis and neep requirements. Tartan souvenirs are available everywhere in the Old Town.
Eating and drinking in Stirling
The atmospheric Old Town is a great place to drink in some Scottish history. Hermann’s based at a 19th-century townhouse serves Scottish cuisine with a novel Austrian twist and has a roaring fire in winter and a bright conservatory in summer. For something different, head for a wee dram at Nicky-Tams Bar and Bothy. A former 18th-century bank, Lucky Corner, where a pools jackpot winner filled in his coupon, is allegedly haunted by two card-playing ghosts. You can blame them for distracting you if you lose the weekly Wii tournament there.
Culture and nightlife in Stirling
At the Stirling Albert Halls theatre you can see anything from tag team wrestling to a nostalgic Showaddywaddy concert. The Tolbooth in Jail Wynd stages comedy, jazz and art events. For theatre, dance and family shows, head to the Macroberts ArtsCentre on the University of Stirling campus.
