The calls of ospreys, curlews and egrets can be heard from your Rutland hotel as this tiny county is dominated by wildlife in and around its 25-mile shoreline of reservoir.

Town and city breaks in Rutland

In Britain’s smallest county sits Oakham, home to the Norman Oakham Castle. Its great hall houses a vast collection of horseshoes belonging to every peer of the realm who has set foot in the county. The market town of Uppingham is a browser’s heaven, with art galleries and antique shops nestling amongst the ironstone houses.

Holidays in the Rutland countryside

There are loads of circular walks and routes in Rutland, meandering past limestone and thatched cottages, Norman churches and cowslip-strewn fields. It’s easy to hire a bike near your Rutland hotel and circle the reservoir. Don’t forget your head for heights at Rockblok climbing wall in Whitwell.

Attractions in Rutland

Normanton Church, now a water museum, dominates the landscape at Rutland Water. Perched three metres above the waterline, it tells the tale of the villages that disappeared when the reservoir was created in the 1970s. Get a bird’s-eye view of the red crested pochards and bitterns at the Rutland Water Nature Reserve at Egleton.
