Scone Palace, Scotland

Book a Perth hotel and explore "the fair city", as Sir Walter Scott described Perth, famous as the site of the coronation of Scottish kings.

Historic Perth

Scone Palace has been the seat of parliaments and the crowning site of kings. The Stone of Destiny was namechecked in Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Queen Victoria was taught curling on the polished floor of its Long Gallery. After John Knox’s 1559 address against idolatry at St John’s Kirk, the congregation took him at his word and stripped the church of ornaments and stoned its priest. The oldest building in Perth is first mentioned in the 12th century and lies between St John’s Place and the high street.

Art and museums in Perth

At the Perth Museum and Art Gallery on George Street children can dress up in Roman armour, answer quizzes and make masks on family fun days. The Fergusson Gallery in Marshall Place houses drawings, painting and other works by the Scottish colourist John Duncan Fergusson. The Black Watch Museum tells the story of Scotland’s oldest Highland regiment's skirmishes in the Napoleonic wars.

Quirky things to do in Perth

Leave your Perth hotel and try your slippery luck at curling at the Perth ice rink in the Dewars Centre on Glasgow Road.

Events in Perth

In August you can watch caber tossing, Highlands dancing and listen to Scottish pipe bans at the Perth Highland Games.
