A stay in a Perth hotel puts you amongst the Georgian elegance of this demure former capital of Scotland and a Stone of Destiny’s throw away from Scone Palace where Scottish kings were invested.
Perth neighbourhoods
Lying mostly west of the River Tay, Perth is topped and tailed by the North and South Inch parks. The town centre between is pedestrianised around the High Street area and dominated by the St John’s Shopping Centre. To the east lies the imposing sweep of the Tay Street promenade with its riverside views, home to the town’s grandest buildings and some of its best restaurants. The cultural heart of the city lies north of the town centre in the Mill Street area.
Shopping in Perth
Perth is known for its markets, which you can stroll to from your Perth hotel. Its Farmers’ Market was the first of its kind in Scotland. Here you can sample fresh salmon, oatcakes and watch demos on cooking wild boar. Also in King Edward Street, the Continental Market offers everything from Dutch toffee waffles to Belgian chocolates. High-street brands dominate St John’s Shopping Centre, which is anchored by department store BhS. Pedestrianised St John’s Street has one of the Britain’s oldest independent department stores, McEwens, while specialist outlets selling antiques, jewellery and children’s wooden toys can be found in surrounding streets.
Eating and drinking in Perth
For an al fresco coffee break while shopping, the café quarter in St John’s Place is where tae put yer booties up. If the waiters at pennant-adorned Executive Suite restaurant at St Johnstone football ground go on about Scotland’s famous 3-2 victory over England in 1967, mention their relegation from the Scottish Premier League in 2002. But only after you’ve received the bill. For traditional Scottish fare, Shetland mussels and locally caught monkfish at Kerachers seafood restaurant in an old Wesleyan chapel are hard to beat. The Auld Hoose in South Street serves locally brewed ales.
