Inverness neighbourhoods
Inverness’s city centre sits on the eastern side of the River Ness, looked down upon by the city castle’s pink crenellations. Douglas Row, Bank Street and Castle Road run alongside the river near your Inverness hotel. Nearby side streets lead you to the action in the city, where you’ll find the Eastgate Shopping Centre and the Victorian Market. North of Ness Bridge and Bridge Street are the station, post office and dozens of restaurants and bars. Head downriver to the south of the city for the tranquil Ness Islands.
Shopping in Inverness
This is the shopping capital of the Highlands and the Eastgate Shopping Centre is always pulsing with purse-wielding Scots ready to do battle. The covered Victorian Market enclosed by Queensgate, and Union Street is a welcome spot on a rainy day where you’ll find well-known brands as well as indie stores. The tall shelves crammed with tomes at Leakey’s second-hand bookshop at Greyfriars Hall are fabulous for aimless browsing. Pick up a natty tartan number at Chisholms Highland Dress on Castle Street.
Eating and drinking in Inverness
Inverness is a compact city with its fair share of international restaurants. But the real joy of the location is tasting its locally produced delights such as salmon caught in the pools around Ness Islands, the game reared in the Highlands and the whisky created in nearby distilleries. Don’t miss out on a drop of uisge beatha at Glen Ord distillery, just north of the city.
Culture and nightlife in Inverness
The likes of Joe Longthorne and Jane McDonald will serenade you at the 850-seat Eden Court Theatre in Bishop’s Road, and in the same complex there are two cinema screens showing the latest blockbusters. For rockier nights out, head over to the Ironworks on Academy Street where you’ll catch bands like the Editors or the Saw Doctors. Live indie music and traditional ceilidhs dominate the scene at Hootananny’s on Church Street, which also serves great Thai food.
