Harrogate neighbourhoods
Parliament Street slices the town centre north to south before turning into West Park and delivering you to Harrogate's 200 acres of cherry-blossom lined parklands known as The Stray. East of Parliament Street shoppers flood the wide, elegant Victorian and Edwardian avenues. Harrogate is famous for its award-winning floral displays, and even in the middle of the shopping district the streets are awash with colour. Meanwhile to the west, in the cobbled Montpellier Quarter, the town takes on a more rustic air. Street cafes, Aladdin's cave-like antique shops and exclusive boutiques, all strung with the town's trademark hanging baskets, make you stay longer than you'd planned.
Shopping in Harrogate
The ladies of Harrogate love to shop, and with a variety of shops near your Harrogate hotel there's plenty to choose from. The main focus for shoppers is around James Street, Cambridge Street and Oxford Street. Head for the floral hanging baskets and cobbled walkways and you’re in gorgeous Montpellier, an area of town heaving with antique shops, tearooms and posh little independent boutiques. Weeton's deli is so committed to provenancing its food that it has its own herd of cattle!
Eating and drinking in Harrogate
Harrogate’s history as a spa town means it has always had more than its fair share of rather nice Victorian-style cake stops, the most famous of which is Betty’s Café Tea Rooms on Parliament Street. But the town’s reinvention as a conference destination also means it has plenty of restaurants. The Drum and Monkey has been serving delicious seafood specialities for over 30 years - think lobster bisque and grilled fresh seabass - and is one of many fine Harrogate eateries.
Culture and nightlife in Harrogate
The Harrogate Theatre puts on plays from Alan Ayckbourn to Peppa Pig. But the really big acts come to Harrogate International Centre including comedians, pop stars, ballet and dance acts. The International Centre runs the wonderful Edwardian Royal Hall, which was built in 1903 and has echoed to a roster of stars from the Beatles to Van Morrison. In Montpellier there's a host of cosy pubs or buzzing wine bars, while you can catch live music at the Blues Cafe Bar.
