A stay in a Gloucestershire hotel puts you at the heart of the Cotswolds with its honey-coloured limestone villages, dry-stone walls and gentle hills. Bordering Wales and home to historic frontier castles, the county is so quiet locals chase Double Gloucester cheese down steep slopes to keep themselves amused.

Town and city breaks in Gloucestershire

Walk in the footsteps of Harry Potter through the cloisters of Gloucester Cathedral, which stood in for Hogwarts in the films. Hot-air balloon flights over the Cotswolds launch from Cirencester. Composer Gustav Holst was born in the Regency spa town of Cheltenham. The piano on which he composed The Planets is displayed at the Holst Birthplace Museum.

Holidays in the Gloucestershire countryside

Inspiring The Hobbit creator JRR Tolkien, the Forest of Dean has befuddling mazes, sculpture trails and tree-top zip wires that will have you shouting “Frodo, the ring – we must have the ring”. The last 18th-century rococo garden in Britain, the Painswick Rococo Garden, is spattered with snowdrops. And you can canoe through the WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre containing the world’s largest collection of swans, geese and flamingos.

At Sudeley Castle in Winchcombe you can pore over the love letters of Katherine Parr, the sixth wife of Henry VIII, who used to enjoy resting his ulcerated leg on her lap.
