Exeter Cathedral

Shut the door on your Exeter hotel and walk out into a maritime city where you can unpick the rich medieval history of the streets or carouse on the Quayside.

Historic Exeter

It’s tough to beat the experience of sitting in StPeter’s Cathedral’s pews as the sun streams across the ornate Gothic vaulting and a soprano voice breaks the silence. Sirs Walter Raleigh and Francis Drake would meet in the timbered Mol’s Coffee House in Cathedral Close, now a bookshop, and the medieval stronghold Rougemont Castle conducts tours and hosts charity gigs starring the likes of local lad Chris Martin from Coldplay.

Art and museums in Exeter

The Royal Albert Memorial Museum has its roots in the globetrotting Victorian era and holds a huge collection of antiquities, from Egyptian tapestry to Saxon household items. Get a taste of Tudor life at St Nicholas Priory which re-creates the 1602 home of the Hurst family.

Quirky things to do in Exeter

Leave your Exeter hotel and go subterranean on a tour of the city’s Underground Passages. Once above ground, visit the House That Moved, a Tudor dwelling that was transported brick by brick to a new location in 1961.

Events in Exeter

The Exeter Festival of Food and Drink showcases local produce and celebrity chefs in April. The Exeter Summer Festival welcomes international artists in comedy, classical music, dance, family entertainment and world music in June/July.
