Lady Godiva rode naked through its streets; Shakespeare performed in its guildhall and Daimler changed the face of British transport here. A stay in a Coventry hotel is an enlightening lesson in how this Midlands town played its part in English history.
Coventry neighbourhoods
Most of the top sights are just west of Coventry University including the pink sandstone Coventry Cathedral and the Victorian Blue Coat School. Off the high street is the Lady Godiva statue and the central shopping area of Coventry. At the northern edge of the city is the Coventry Transport Museum, a petrolhead’s paradise.
Shopping in Coventry
The West Orchards ShoppingCentre and Lower Precinct Shopping Centre have cornered the market for big brands along with Cathedral Lanes and the Upper Precinct. Medieval Spon Street is where the architectural interest lies, while Greyfriars Walk offers one-off bits and pieces. Coventry can also boast about having Ikea’s first town centre UK store. Whether that's a good thing or not is up for debate!

This is traditional pub territory so you can expect a decent pint when you emerge from your Coventry hotel. The Old Windmill on Spon Street has an atmospheric setting for a handpulled ale. If you like gigging when you’re swigging, the Hand and Heart in Far Gosford Street is an established music lover’s pub. If organic is your bag, head for Garden Organic Ryton where you can enjoy a seasonal menu amongst 10 acres of gardens where most of what you’re eating was grown. Turmeric Gold, housed in a 15th-century Coventry cottage, has won awards for its classy spicy dishes.
Culture and nightlife in Coventry
The post-war Grade II Belgrade Theatre, so named in thanks to the city that provided the theatre’s timber, receives national touring artists, hosting musicals, theatre and dance. Panto fans should fly off to the City College Theatre – oh no they shouldn’t, oh yes they should – where professional and amateur shows are hosted. Those who fancy themselves as budding musicians might like to try the regular open mic night at the Tin Angel.
