Chester Cathedral

Book a Chester hotel to admire its medieval and Roman city walls, Victorian half-timbered shopping streets and glorious riverside parks.

Historic Chester

You can walk the two-mile perimeter of Old Chester along its walls, the most intact in Britain. After dark, watch out for a Welshman – an ancient bylaw allows you to shoot him if he’s in the city after sunset. We advise against this. Medieval, Norman, Tudor and Victorian buildings dot this tourist-soaked city. Absorb its antiquity in a Chester Cathedral pew as a choir floats Handel’s Messiah round the Norman arches.

Art and museums in Chester

Defend the city walls with your shield and get shouted at by a centurion at the Dewa Roman Experience. You’ll get a grip on the city’s 2,000-year history at the Grosvenor Museum with tons of relics detailing life within the walls.

Quirky things to do in Chester

See if you can spot the 13th-century coffin, "Dust to Dust" inscribed upon it, tucked into an arch in the ruins of the Norman St John the Baptist Church. Then head to Grosvenor Park next door for a stroll and a cruise along the Dee.

Events in Chester

Chester Folk Festival in May brings a mellow music crowd to the city. Dating from the 1400s, the Winter Watch Parade in December lights up the streets with fire-breathers, devils, angels and the Lord of Misrule.
