Cambridge neighbourhoods
Central Cambridge sits around the Corn Exchange and the Lion Yard Shopping Centre, the start of some of the city’s walking tours. You can get your bearings with a wander from your Cambridge hotel through Cambridge’s many green spaces. In Jesus Green, between the Cam and Jesus College, you’ll find the famous 100-yard outdoor pool. Cross Victoria Avenue over to Midsummer Common which plays host to the music bonanza Strawberry Fair every June. To the west lie the Backs, between the river and Trinity, Clare and Queens’ Colleges, perfect for lolling and reading.
Shopping in Cambridge
Cambridge is choc full of independent boutiques hidden down narrow side streets. Locals looking for the offbeat love Bene’t Street, where bookstores sit next to Italian clothes boutiques, or Rose Crescent for tailors and jewellers. The daily fruit and veg market in Market Square turns crafty on Sundays and the All Saints Art and Craft Market takes place every Saturday in St John’s Street. For high-street names, the Christ’s Lane Centre, Grafton Centre and the Grand Arcade are all central. Antiquarian bookshops cluster on the backstreets off Kings Parade.
Eating and drinking in Cambridge
The large Italian population in Cambridge ensures there are good pasta and pizza joints around the city. Head to Mill Road if you fancy a great curry or tasty noodles, or Regent Street for authentic Turkish, Thai, Chinese and pizza. Cambridge has some excellent pubs, the most famous probably the Eagle on Bene’t Street where Francis Crick burst in one day in 1953 to tell mates he'd discovered the structure of DNA.
Culture and nightlife in Cambridge
Catch the next comedy superstars at ADC Theatre where the Cambridge Footlights performs. Cambridge Arts Theatre puts on a good range of shows, from Shakespeare to Noël Coward and Alan Ayckbourn to big-band orchestras. Catch new and foreign-language films at the Arts Picturehouse. The Corn Exchange, the largest venue in the city, hosts touring comedians, dance troupes, ballet and opera.
